As a certified project manager I’ve experienced a wide variety of projects over the years, from short-simple-sweet to the complex-crazy-chaotic. In my experience project management is critical to success and a good project manager is the glue that holds it all together. Here are 7 ways effective project management can increase your chances of success: 1. Proper & Thorough Planning
Establishing a project plan and detailed schedule upfront with all the necessary tasks, dependencies, task owners and due dates will set the foundation for the project. It is the basis for tracking appropriately, ensuring goals are aligned and the right budget is allocated to complete the project. 2. Monitoring Progress & Ensuring Forward Movement Provides structure to ensure actions are tracked and followed through, documentation is created and maintained, project stays on schedule and all stakeholders have what they need to execute successfully – all while communicating effectively throughout the project. 3. Establishing Accountability Assigning tasks and due dates to the project team establishes accountability; tracking those tasks throughout the project identifies upcoming deadlines and task owners responsible for completing on time. Missed due dates or inaccurate completion of tasks are addressed, ensuring there is accountability from beginning to end. 4. Ensuring Goals & Objectives are Being Met Having the right project performance metrics in place enables validation against strategy and goals, confirming the team is accomplishing what is needed according to plan and budget to meet end-state goals of the project and the business overall. 5. Early Identification and Resolution of Issues Utilizing project tools, documentation and tracking identifies issues and impeding risks early such that problems can be solved in a timely manner. Project managers are problem solvers and will try to mitigate the risk before it becomes an issue or provide suggested solutions for issues that needs to be escalated to business owners. 6. Managing Resources Providing holistic view of task assignments gives insight of project teams workload as well as associated project budget expenditures; also managing team day to day to ensure implementation success. 7. Facilitating Decision Making Tracking of all project information and coordinating efforts among all project members allows easier identification of decisions needed, by when and with the necessary information to make informed decisions.
